Chickpea Pasta e Ceci (14g Fiber, One Pot)
Pasta e ceci — literally “pasta and chickpeas” — is the kind of humble Roman dinner that’s been feeding families for centuries precisely because it’s cheap, fast, and deeply satisfying. It also happens to be a fiber powerhouse: whole wheat pasta and two cans of chickpeas simmered into one silky pot gives you 14 grams of fiber per bowl. Comfort food that loves you back.
The short version
- 25 minutes, one pot, pantry ingredients
- 14g fiber and 18g protein per bowl
- The trick: crush half the chickpeas to thicken the sauce
- Naturally vegetarian, easily vegan, ~$1.50 a serving
The one-pot magic
What makes this dish special is that the pasta cooks in the sauce, not in a separate pot of water. As it simmers, it releases starch that thickens everything into a glossy, stew-like consistency — and crushing half the chickpeas early does the same, building a creamy base with no cream involved. The result clings to every piece of pasta.
Two cans of chickpeas bring about 24 grams of fiber, and swapping in whole wheat pasta adds several more. That’s how a simple bowl of pasta clears 14 grams — roughly five times a regular pasta dinner.

Tips for the best bowl
- Don’t skip the tomato paste step — cooking it for a minute until it darkens deepens the whole sauce.
- Stir often once the pasta goes in — the starchy sauce catches on the bottom if you don’t.
- Finish with good olive oil — a raw drizzle at the table is traditional and makes it taste restaurant-level.
- Salt matters — chickpeas and pasta both need it; taste and adjust at the end.
Frequently asked questions
What pasta shape works best?
Small shapes are traditional and practical — ditalini, small shells, or broken spaghetti. They cook evenly in the sauce and are easy to eat with a spoon. Whole wheat versions add the most fiber.
Can I make it gluten-free?
Yes — use a gluten-free short pasta, ideally a chickpea or lentil-based one, which bumps the fiber even higher. Add it a little later and watch closely, as gluten-free pasta can soften fast in sauce.
My sauce got too thick — what happened?
The pasta keeps absorbing liquid, especially as leftovers. Just stir in a splash of broth or water when reheating and it comes right back to silky.
Is this filling enough as a main?
Very — 18g of protein and 14g of fiber per bowl make it genuinely satisfying on its own. A simple green salad on the side rounds it out. It’s a regular in our 7-day meal plan.
The recipe

Chickpea Pasta e Ceci (14g Fiber)
Ingredients
Method
- Warm the olive oil in a large pot. Cook the onion until soft, about 4 minutes, then add the garlic and tomato paste and stir for a minute until the paste darkens slightly.
- Add one can of chickpeas, the crushed tomatoes and the broth. Bring to a simmer, then use a potato masher or fork to lightly crush about half the chickpeas against the pot — this thickens the sauce into something velvety.

- Add the second can of whole chickpeas and the dry pasta. Simmer, stirring often so nothing sticks, for 10–12 minutes until the pasta is cooked and the sauce is thick and stew-like. Add a splash more broth if it gets too dry.
- Season well with salt and pepper. Serve in bowls with grated parmesan, torn basil, and a generous drizzle of olive oil.
